Diploma Supplement (DS)

The Diploma Supplement (DS) is a document attached to a higher education diploma issued to graduates in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). It should be issued automatically, free of charge and in a widely spoken European language.

The DS gives a detailed description of its holder´s learning outcomes, and the nature, level, context, content and status of individual study components.

The purpose of this mobility tool is to improve the international transparency and fair academic and professional recognition of qualifications. The DS should include the use of transparency tools such as learning outcomes, ECTS, national qualification framework(s) and external national quality assurance and/or accreditation.

The DS was initiated by UNESCO and revised jointly by UNESCO, the European Commission and the Council of Europe. An updated version was adopted by the Lisbon Recognition Convention Committee in 2007 and 2019 respectively. DS is one of the five Europass transparency tools.
